Supporting a Fight Outside the Cage
By Danielle Gallagher

As MMA grows in popularity, there are more opportunities for fighters and fans alike to give back to the community. Live to Fight Inc is one such opportunity. It is a not-for-profit charity with a mission of “Fighting relentlessly for those in the martial arts and mixed martial arts community who are suffering from life threatening illnesses.”

Live To Fight is run by cancer survivor and martial artist Kristen Brown. She realized that there was no official charity for those suffering from illnesses in the martial arts and MMA community, and she became inspired to create one when she attended a benefit for UFC fighter Dan Miller’s ill son. His son was in need of a kidney transplant, and the medical bills were piling up. Because health insurance is lacking in the MMA community, those suffering from serious illness also have to deal with the stress of very costly medical bills.
The charity has drawn attention from several major players in the MMA world. Renowned MMA film-maker Bobby Razak has directed a youtube video for the charity, and Invicta FC founder Shannon Knapp is a major supporter of the organization. Chris Weidman, the current UFC Middleweight Champion, recently joined forces with UFC fighter John Miller, BJJ expert Renato Laranja, and grappling expert John Danaher to produce a very informative no-gi Brazilian Jiu Jitsu seminar. The seminar was hosted at the Renzo Gracie BJJ Academy in New York City, and various techniques were demonstrated by the special guests. The seminar is available for download at for a $20 donation.
The charity is currently campaigning on to raise $50,000 for members of the community facing life threatening illnesses. Although Live To Fight was formed less than a year ago, it has already reached out to members in the community in need of support and has made an impact on many lives. The organization does not only raise money; it promotes awareness and offers much-needed support for those who are suffering. More information about the organization and upcoming events can be found on, or on their Facebook page.
